WHAT IS CONTENTION RATIO?

What is contention ratio, and how does it affect broadband usage experience?

This is a measurement of the number of other subscribers you are "contending" with for your share of ADSL bandwidth leading to your local exchange. For example, the contention ratio as published by Telkom is 20:1. This means that you would share your bandwidth with no more than 20 subscribers on the Telkom Network.

Contention ratio simply means "sharing". It refers to the maximum number of other people that a user has to share the connection infrastructure with. In other words, it entails how much of an ISP’s bandwidth users share between themselves. Most ISP’s offer something in the range of 20:1 and up to 50:1. When it comes to contention ratio, the lower the ratio, the better the service the customer receives.

Maybe before you subscribe to a broadband service, it would be advisable to ask them what their contention ratio is!

You should always seek ISP’s with the lowest contention ratios.

For more information on contention ratio’s it may be worth checking out the WIKI at
